5 Ways to Beat the Blues

winterblues

Yes, we’re dangerously close to the season (in Canada) we try and avoid at all costs- we dig our heels deep into fall’s earth and resist the impending gloom that mother nature has in store for us: Winter.  Similar to our birthdays we  savor the fall until the very last second, of the last minute, of the last day. However we have no choice but to face the music.. another year older, another glorious autumn turned to winter. Just as our I.D.’s bear the truth of our age, the bald trees bear the inevitable truth of winter’s arrival. Unlike the 24 hours of birthday despair, mother nature has the audacity to make us endure the Winter for months on end. Just when we believe it’s over and we pack away our parkas/dust off our colorful spring clothes she comes roaring back with yet another few weeks of winter misery! Both time and seasons torment us without our permission, so we may as well work towards making this winter a little more bearable. Three cheers to sinus infections, black ice, and dry skin- hurrah!

Mindless Munching

Weight loss requires a delicate and harmonious relationship between both calories consumed and calories expended. There needs to be a deficit in calories to achieve a loss. This unfortunately means that every little thing we put in our mouth does in fact count. Yes, this even includes if you nibbled while standing up tending to your kid’s lunch, talking on the phone with your husband who’s just “so stressed” with work, feeding the family dog AND you didn’t even get the chance to enjoy it! Moderation- Not Just A Fairytale

Moderation- Not Just A Fairytale

This is the follow-up to the post, Don’t You Dare Say the “D” Word begging you to reconsider how you diet and urging you to take a more balanced approach: moderation. Of course I didn’t expect that everyone would be enlightened by my last post and rejoice, “I’ll never diet again!” (although that would be nice). In order to make that kind of commitment, you need tangible advice- real steps, a game plan to provide some kind of direction for this great of a change. (more…)

Goodbye Gluten?

goodbye glutan2Raise your hand if you deliberately avoid food items that contain traces of peanuts despite you not having any kind of allergy. I suspect that there are few to none of you raising your hand.  How many  of  you purchase gluten-free foods although you do not suffer from Celiac disease or have a known intolerance to gluten?  According to a survey conducted by the NPD Group nearly one third of us are trying to avoid gluten, although recent statistics reveal approximately only 1 percent of Americans are believed to have Celiac disease. Don’t You Dare Say The “D” Word

Don’t You Dare Say The “D” Word

Yes, I’m referring to the dreaded word, “diet”. I can feel myself shudder whenever I hear some poor unsuspecting soul proudly proclaim that they have just begun the “no carb”, “no fat”, “liquid” or “ultra low cal” diet. I always want to shriek “for the love of God, DON’T DO IT!” but I know that like anything else in life, they’ll soon discover the ugly truth in  time. It calls to mind when your friend is dating “that jerk” who falsely promises her the world along with eternal happiness. She somehow consumes his lies and digests them into rainbows.  From the outside looking in it’s abundantly clear that (in time) this facade will reveal itself, leaving your friend hopeless and jaded. In either case we find ourselves offering support while hoping that our friend will err on the side of caution moving forward.
